Curriculum Intent

Our curriculum has been designed to ensure that each child can develop their individuality which celebrates their own gifts and talents so they achieve their full potential. Gospel values are at the heart of this.

We aim to ensure our children are prepared for life beyond St Joseph’s. That they develop a lifelong interest in learning and are keen to continue their learning journey beyond primary and secondary education.

We aim to give the children a broad and balanced curriculum which offers a range of extra-curricular activities and opportunities to support their personal growth and prepare them for life in modern Britain. The close links with our parish and community will give the children an opportunity to be involved in local issues as well as a national and global awareness.

Reading and Writing

At St Joseph’s we teach phonics using Read Write Inc, developed by Ruth Miskin.  We believe this provides a structured and systematic approach to teaching English. It is designed to create fluent readers, confident speakers and willing writers.  Each Read Write Inc. programme meets the higher expectations of the National Curriculum and uses effective assessment to accelerate every child’s progress and prepare them for the National Curriculum Tests.  This approach is used predominantly in EYFS- KS1.

In KS1, we use Oxford Trading Tree books that have synthetic phonics at the heart.  Each band is levelled so children are reading at their own level.  In KS2, we follow a reading scheme called TreeTops.  This encourages all children to read for pleasure and choose from the biggest collection of quality books.  The aims of this scheme are to make all children confident and choose books that they want to read.  Each book is matched to the individual child’s ability.  In guided reading we use Project X to further develop our love of reading.  All children are encouraged to read at home for at least 10 minutes.
